How to upload digital images to this Sharepoint WEB site.

To begin with, you need your site user account and password. If you don't have one or remember what they are, email me at "angelom @ comcast.net".

You must Sign In to upload images to this site before you can follow along with the tutorial.

Uploading images: Sending images to this WEB site.

I assume you have transfered the images from your camera to your local computer. I also assume you know where your images are saved. On most computers, this is usually C:\My Documents\My Pictures\

Images on this site are stored in Picture Libraries, so the first step in uploading is to navigate to the Picture Library you want to place your photographs into. You can find a list of photo libraries by clicking the "Documents and Lists" Menu at the top Navigation Bar. Note: Not all libraries are not for photographs, so pay attention to be sure you select a photo library and not a document library.

Scroll down the Library List page and select the Library titled you want to store your image to; then you are ready to select Upload from the Action Menu.

Picture Library Upload Tool:

When uploading a single image, you simply select the browse Button to use the Windows File Open dialog, navigate to your local images and select the file name of your image; then click the upload button.

When uploading multiple images, you should click the link labeled "Upload Multiple" to start the Microsoft Picture Upload Manager program.

There are three steps to upload multiple images:

Locate the source directory on your local computer.
Start the image upload process by clicking the upload button.

Choose the Upload option for image compression.

To begin, click on the option to Upload Multiple Pictures.
Note: You must have signed-in to see these options

Next you need to identify yourself to the Web server "yes, again!" by entering your user name and password. Even though you have Signed-In, you must authenticate again to upload images. If your account doesn't have upload privileges, contact me for assistance.

This next illustration shows the login dialog box. Replace what ever is in this dialog box with your username and password for this site. Don't forget the MAC\ prefix to your user name: example: MAC\username

IMPORTANT NOTE: If this is the first time you ever used this tool, it can take a few seconds to load. Also, allow installation of any Active-x Controls needed to use this web site.

If the Upload Manager Tool does not start, or if an error message is displayed, stop what you are doing and contact me for assistance. There may be a problem with your user account or you may not have the correct version of Windows Explorer to use this tool, in which case other upload methods are available.

Once Logged into the site the Picture Manager will open. Be patient; there may be a brief delay the first time you use this tool. You may need to allow the download of the Active-X control.

The Picture Manager has 3 panels.

The left side is for locating your images
Click the Add Picture Shortcut...
The center is for selecting images to upload
Control Click or Shift Click to select files
The right panel is for setting Upload settings
Always choose to optimize for viewing

This is not as complicated as it first appears.

1.) First find your pictures by clicking the Add Picture Shortcut... link in the top left hand column.

Your picture locations will be saved for easy selection next time you use the tool.

2.) Second, in the center panel, select only the images you want to upload.
Tip: use the standard Windows methods for selecting list items.
Hold the Control-Key while clicking individual images.

3.) Third, in the right hand panel, click the radio button next to 'send pictures optimized for viewing...', and then click the button labeled 'Upload and Close' to start the upload process.

That's it, your done. Now email me a nice description of your series of photos and I'll make it all look nice.

Here are Further Tips and Help using the Upload Manager:

This is a detailed explanation of the Upload Manager's three panels.

The Left Panel:

		The left panel is for finding the images on your local computer. If this is your first time uploading images, the left panel may be empty. Clicking the link Add Picture Shortcut... under the heading Picture Shortcuts opens a file browser tool for locating your digital photographs and adding a short cut to their location. Clicking on a folder in the Left Panel causes images within that folder to be displayed in the center panel. The center panel is where you select photographs to be uploaded. Picture Shortcuts are saved so you can easily find folders where your pictures are stored. Notice the (1) next to some folders in the Picture Shortcuts panel? The number 1 indicates there are one image(s) in that directory.

The Center Panel:

		The Center Panel is where you select images for uploading. You can select All images or just a few. To select individual images, hold the CTRL (Control) Key down while mouse clicking the images you want to upload. You can select all images in the currently selected folder by pulling down the Edit menu and clicking the Select All menu option. The three icons above the displayed images simply change the size of the image thumbnails. You'll notice a menu link item labeled Edit Pictures... I suggest you do not edit your photographs in this application. upload them first, then edit them using the Web site's editing tools. They are quite good and easy to use.

The Right Panel:

		The most important thing to do here is click the radio button next to O Send Pictures Optimized for viewing on the Web. Reducing the size of the images means they take up less disk space on the Web Server; It is important for the health of this web site that images be reduced in size. The amount of reduction is handled automatically. Images viewed on a computer screen do not require as much information as, for instance, a printer needs to make high quality prints. Since this site is intended for viewing photographs on your monitor, I ask that you optimize all uploads for viewing on the Web. NOTE: The default setting is O Send original pictures. Please change this to the optimized setting or I Will be forced to remove your files from the site.
